These guards are for the protection of lands and properties, enforcement of laws, protection of
the people, and the family themselves.
The King may have no more than 5,000 household troops under arms at any time, and may call up to
twice the number of troops from each of his vassal's demenses that the vassal themself may call. He must also explicitly
authorize any raising of troops greater than that allowable by treaty.
The King can call upon the troops of his vassals in times of great need. Examples of such times
are: famines, floods or other natural disasters, invasions, rebellions, wars, or crusades. By treaty, he is limited in the
number of troops he can call upon at a given time, except where a noble is rebelling against him.
Should a noble rebel against the Crown, or against his liege, the King will offer his vassals -
if any - and their subjects incentives to stay loyal to the Crown; such incentives may be positive (e.g., the forgiving of
debts owed, new lands, or ownership of land currently occupied) or negative (e.g., threat of execution, holding family hostage,
banishment). The King may also directly commission the troops of the rebel lord. He may retain the services of his vassals'
troops for the duration of the rebellion.
In the case of a war, crusade, or invasion by a foreign army, the King has broad powers to call
upon the support of his vassals and subjects; however, he can only call upon them for a set period, and must receive his
vassals' consent if he desires to hold them beyond that period. Due to the nature of the feudal economy, however, this option
rarely needs to be exercised; most combat is performed in the summer or winter, where the demand for agricultural labor is low.
